The Alpenglow 100

Vale, Vert, Views & Vibes
Friday, July 3 - Sunday, July 5, 2026 - 35km, 60km, 100km, and kids

Overview

Date: Friday, July 3 - Sunday, July 5, 2026
Distances: 35km, 60km, 100km, and kids

Where the heck is Valemount, BC you say? Well as the locals would tell you, “it’s in the middle of everywhere”, and we’d tend to agree. Valemount (valley – mountains) and the Robson Valley lies at the confluence of three mountain ranges, The Canadian Rockies, The Cariboos and The Monashees, each spectacular in their own right. With just over 1000 local residents, Vale, as the locals call it, is the definition of a small mountain town that’s just a little off the beaten path for most people.

This area has something for everyone though, and is located just 20 mins from the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, Mt. Robson, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you’ve not yet stared up at the nearly 13,000 foot summit of Mt. Robson, then quite frankly you’ve not seen all the Canadian Rockies has to offer. A family friendly hike to Kinney Lake, below Robson, is must on any traveller's to do list, and Jasper, AB is but an hour east of here.

The Alpenglow 100 offers three race distances, incorporating two local mountains, McKirdy & Swift, topping out at over 2300 meters / almost 8000ft. The high alpine offers sightline views over Mt. Robson to the North, The Premier’s Range to the west, endless Rockies Peaks to the east, plus the Monashees and Kinbasket Lake to the south. Your head will be on a swivel, and you’ll want to pack your camera along!

Alpenglow is the phenomenon of refracted sunlight hitting mountain slopes after the sun has dipped below the horizon, or before it has crested the horizon, pre-sunrise or post-sunset. It creates an unexpected glow on high mountain peaks with the landscape below receiving very little light comparatively. Alpenglow is beautiful, and so are you, and so are these races! We cannot wait to host you in Valemount, BC for a mountain running event like no other. This is as far from corporate as you can get. Just remember, there's no "i" in Vale. 😉

Kids Race:

The Kids Race is about 1km in length, and most runners are aged between 3 – 10, though we welcome all kids to participate. It’s not timed, is non-competitive and purely for the fun of all involved, but with special kids’ bibs, finisher stickers to collect, and random draw prizes. Registration is FREE! But during registration, we offer parents the opportunity to donate to Butterfly Support Network, an organization that supports families dealing with pregnancy and infant loss.

Shuttles will run regularly from the finish back to the Rec Centre parking. No parking is available at the start/finish. Runners will be given priority boarding on shuttles to the start.

Runner drop offs will be permitted at the farm for the start of each race. Crew can then park at Valemount Community Hall and take the shuttle back to watch the start of the race.

Mandatory Gear

Please note that these are mountain races that go to over 2000m+ elevation (7800ft high point on 60k and 100k) and the races happen in early July. What that means locally is that it’s squarely in the transition from colder spring conditions to warmer summer conditions. This race will certainly see it all over the years to come. There will be years (though few and far between) where runners have to deal with fresh snow and nighttime lows below freezing, whereas most years we’re expecting daytime highs approaching 20+ degrees Celsius.

*I (Gary) was in Valemount this past year over these exact dates, and the conditions were near perfect all week. It was cold and sunny to start the week (pants and jackets at night), and warm and sunny to finish (shorts and tees), and this seems to be the typical conditions for this specific time of year.

Mandatory gear is to help protect runners from the high alpine overnight conditions they’ll specifically encounter on race weekend.

100km Mandatory Gear

Our 100km mandatory gear list will be based on what each year presents in the lead up to race day. The bare minimum 100km mandatory gear for all runners on a sunny nice weather weekend will be as follows:

buff / toque / gloves / running pack / water & food supplies / 2x space blankets or 1x emerg bivy / windproof hooded jacket / whistle attached to outside of pack or clothing / collapsible cup to be used at all aid stations for beverages and food (we are a 100% cupless race, except for hot food items where we’ll provide cups for soups and hot coffee)

100km runners will need to add two light sources of minimum 150 lumens each, such as headlamp and hand torch, both in working condition. Bring spare batteries for your lights. You start your race by running overnight! Time between sunset and sunrise on race weekend is 7h12m.

All runners must arrive in Valemount prepared for the worst possible conditions, which would involve wind, rain and possibly even snow.

If race week forecasts look challenging, additional mandatory gear will include: waterproof breathable hooded jacket / insulating layer long-sleeve shirt / long running pants or leggings or a combination of leggings and long socks which cover legs entirely (optional but recommended waterproof pants).

60km Mandatory Gear

Ability to carry food and fluids, ideally via running pack or waist pack. Appropriate clothes for the conditions. Cup or bottle for all aid station fluids, we are a 100% cupless race, except for hot food items like soups and coffee where cups are provided.

35km Mandatory Gear

Ability to carry food and fluids, ideally via running pack or waist pack. Appropriate clothes for the conditions, which can be anything from 25 degrees and sunny to 10 degrees with rain down low and even the potential for snow up high. Cup or bottle for all aid station fluids, we are a 100% cupless race, except for hot food items like soups and coffee.

Poles

Poles are allowed for all Alpenglow races.

Cupless

In our effort to reduce waste, all our races are cup-free, meaning you’ll need to pack along your own cup for fluids at aid stations and at the finish line. Here are two suggestions: a collapsible cup (available in our merch store), or a homemade version – cutting the top off an empty juicebox.

Bag Check

There will be a tent at the start/finish line to leave a bag, but it is not monitored so please label your bag and do not leave any valuables.

Dropping off your Drop Bags

This is done by you, as follows.

For 100km runners all drop bags must be dropped off a bib pickup at the Best Western Plus, prior to 8pm. *no 100km drop bags will be accepted at the start line. No 100km bibs will be present at the start line. All 100km runners must check in by 8pm Friday night at race headquarters.

For 60km runners, your single drop bag must be dropped off by you. We will accept drop bags during package pickup on Friday at the Best Western and also during package pickup at the race start line on Saturday morning.

We will have a single clearly marked location (at race HQ for 100km, and at the race start line for 60km) for you to place your individual drop bag(s). We will provide duct tape and sharpies for you to clearly label you bag with your full name and your race bib number. Please keep drop bags to a reasonable size, usually the size of a shoe box, a shoe bag, a small backpack. Typical drop bag supplies would include spare gear / clothing / lube and some food items that you train with that you may not find at the aid stations, such as a specific drink mix or a brand of product that you prefer.

Please note that oversized drop bags will not be permitted and will be denied on site.

Please note that drop bags not claimed by you by end of day Sunday will be donated to charity or disposed of entirely. We will not be able to store or ship any drop bag supplies under any circumstances. Drop bags will return to the finish line immediately following the shutdown of each independent drop bag location.

Crew Access

Crew access will be incredibly limited. Driving to a listed non-crew access point will involve your runner being disqualified. One of the biggest potential issues we can create that will negatively impact the race, would be introducing vehicular traffic where we explicitly communicate against this.

  • NO PARKING in the bike park lots below McKirdy under any circumstances
  • the mountain is not closed for our race, and Valemount Bike Park will still need to operate. If it’s a nice weekend in July it’ll already be packed with riders.
  • NO access on the McKirdy side whatsoever. Do not drive up and into the Valemount Bike Park area. You will be stopped and turned around.

35km race: NO CREW ACCESS

60km race: 1x crew access point at AS1 Road involves 1km gravel driving. You do not need a truck, and as long as you drive slowly any vehicle should be fine.

*this crew access point is too early in the race for you to make it to ahead of your runner. It is also mostly pointless to attempt to crew for your runner at the very first aid station. As such there is really no reasonable crew access for the 60k race. Sorry, we are unable to allow traffic to proceed up Swift Mountain above the very first aid station. This creates a safety issue for runners, and a permit issue for the race going forward.

100km race: 1x crew access point at Swift aid stn where you can see your runner twice (AS 4- distance 36.5KM & AS9 distance 64.4KM) The road involves 1km gravel driving. You do not need a truck, and as long as you drive slowly any vehicle should be fine.

Driving Directions to Crew Access Aid Stations

AS Swift is the only crew access aid station for 100km and 60km. Driving instructions:

  1. Starting at the “Welcome to Valemount” sign at the traffic lights in town, facing the highway, zero your ODO.
  2. Head right towards Jasper on HWY 5.
  3. Turn right on Loseth Road 1.2km from the main traffic lights in Valemount.
  4. You’ll be turning at the “iRVin’s RV Park & Campground” and keeping it on your right as you drive down Loesth Road.
  5. Stay on Loseth Road for 1.5km as it transitions from pavement to gravel
  6. Turn right at the UNCONTROLLED railway crossing. Please proceed with caution
  7. After crossing the rail line, follow the Swift Mainline FSR with a slight right heading uphill. (Hiker and Staging area signs).
  8. In 100m, bear left and continue up Swift Mountain road for 1km to the Swift Mountain Aid Station.
  9. Crew Parking is a further 100m past the Aid Station.
  10. DO NOT PROCEED PAST THE PARKING AREA. No vehicles are allowed up the Swift Mtn FSR past our crew access aid station. No crew access allowed at “M&M” and “Alpine” aid stations.
  11. Please note that if you drop a pin at this location, Google Maps will show you a “shortcut” from in town. Please note that this “shortcut” is a 4×4 high clearance only service road that sees no maintenance. Following these directions allows all vehicles to easily access the Swift Mountain aid station / crew location with no need for 4×4 and no need for a high clearance vehicle.
